Melkio and AlterEgo painted together for a special project of the Italian Institute of Technology
“Quando Melkio è venuto a trovarci mesi fa eravamo un po’ scettici sul risultato, ma il team del robot ALTER EGO (la linea di ricerca Soft Robotics for Human Cooperation and Rehabilitation di IIT) insieme al ricercatore e team leader Manuel Catalano, hanno accolto la sfida e insieme sono riusciti a sviluppare un progetto che potesse unire la robotica con il lavoro di un artista.
Dopo i primi incontri, infatti, tra AlterEgo e Melkio, l’artista si è reso conto di un effetto sorprendente. Lavorare con un robot è come dipingere con un bambino di 3 anni, si sperimenta una “pittura istintiva”, non completamente controllata, per creare tratti dal richiamo ancestrale.”

“When Melkio came to visit us months ago we were a bit skeptical about the result, but the robot team Alter Ego (the Soft Robotics for Human Cooperation and Rehabilitation research line of IIT) together with the researcher and team leader Manuel Catalano, accepted the challenge and together managed to develop a project that could combine robotics with the work of an artist.
In fact, after the first meetings between AlterEgo and Melkio, the artist realized a surprising effect. Working with a robot is like painting with a 3 year old child, you experience an “instinctive painting”, not completely controlled, to create traits with an ancestral reference“

Dopo i primi incontri con il robot Alter Ego, mi sono reso conto della straordinaria opportunità di dipingere con qualcosa che è, in qualche maniera, opposto da quello che ci si aspetta.
Il Robot, seppur una macchina complessa, permetteva di dipingere in una maniera molto istintiva. Era come se avessi avuto l’opportunità di dipingere attraverso un bambino di 3 anni. Pertanto ho deciso di rappresentare cose semplici, viste con uno sguardo semplice, come quello di un bambino.
Ho pensato ed immaginato quindi 3 tele grandi.
After the first encounters with the Alter Ego robot, I realized the extraordinary opportunity to paint with something that is, in some way, opposite to what is expected. The Robot, although a complex machine, allowed you to paint in a very instinctive way. It was as if I had the opportunity to paint through a 3 year old. Therefore I decided to represent simple things, seen with a simple gaze, like that of a child. I therefore thought and imagined 3 large canvases.

HUMANITY
Il suo sguardo verso il mondo esterno, nello specifico verso l’essere umano, che per la sua esperienza, avendo a che fare con scienziati, ricercatori o un pubblico curioso, lo circorda e lo accoglie con benevolenza.
His gaze towards the outside world, specifically towards the human being, who due to his experience, dealing with scientists, researchers or a curious public, surrounds him and welcomes him with benevolence.
ESSENCE
Uno sguardo più profondo verso la sua sostanza: la sua composizione modulare che nella sua essenza può esser vista come una semplice serie di cubi ma che attraverso le mani e il visore (quindi l’apporto umano) prende non solo una forma ma delinea le sue fondamenta.
A deeper look at its substance: its modular composition which in its essence can be seen as a simple series of cubes but which through the hands and the viewer (therefore the human contribution) takes not only a shape but outlines its foundations.

Tutte queste opere su carta (8 in tutto) hanno la caratteristica di disegni scarabocchiati tipica dei bambini, dove le proporzioni sono falsate e gli elementi distinguibili del disegno vanno “trovati”. Queste opere rappresentano sempre esseri umani o volti, perchè in fondo è questo quello che Alter Ego Vede principalmente.
All of these paper works ( 8 in total ) have the characteristic of scribbled drawings typical of children, where the proportions are distorted and the distinguishable elements of the drawing have to be “found”. These works always represent human beings or faces, because ultimately this is what Alter Ego mainly sees.

Infine, in occasione dell’evento al Muraless di Verona, Melkio ha sviluppato una piccola scultura con la scocca decorata della testa del robot tenuta in piedi dal calco della mano dell’artista.

Finally, for the event at the Muraless in Verona, Melkio developed a small sculpture with the decorated body of the robot’s head held upright by the cast of the artist’s hand.

Alter Ego at Acquario di Genova

Martedì 10 giugno, dalle 9:30 alle 18:00, l’Acquario di Genova ospiterà Alter-Ego, il robot umanoide sviluppato dall’Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia interagirà con i visitatori e le visitatrici fornendo informazioni sulle caratteristiche dei cetacei e sulla loro conservazione, con particolare attenzione alla specie ospitata in Acquario, il tursiope.
Il robot Alter-Ego è stato protagonista di numerose attività che uniscono scienza, cultura e intrattenimento: ha preso parte al programma televisivo “Italia’s Got Talent”, recitato nello spettacolo teatrale “Io Robot”, è stato uno dei due robot italiani ammesso alla fase finale di “ANA Avatar XPRIZE”, una competizione tra avatar robotici, e ha dipinto opere in collaborazione con l’artista genovese Melkio che ne ha anche firmato le scocche. Sarà proprio questa versione del robot arricchita dall’intervento di Melkio a essere al centro della sperimentazione all’Acquario.
On Tuesday 10 June, from 9:30 to 18:00, the Genoa Aquarium will host Alter-Ego, the humanoid robot developed by the Italian Institute of Technology, which will interact with visitors, providing information on the characteristics of cetaceans and their conservation, with particular attention to the species hosted in the Aquarium, the bottlenose dolphin.
The Alter-Ego robot has been the protagonist of numerous activities that combine science, culture and entertainment: it took part in the television program “Italia’s Got Talent”, acted in the theatrical show “Io Robot”, was one of the two Italian robots admitted to the final phase of “ANA Avatar XPRIZE”, a competition between robotic avatars, and painted works in collaboration with the Genoese artist Melkio who also signed the bodies. It will be precisely this version of the robot enriched by the intervention of Melkio that will be at the center of the experimentation at the Aquarium.
